A very simple yet commonly employed radical, found in a whole array of deliciously useful characters. The radical itself represents a cave, so if you can picture the 宀 as the roof of a 'cave' or 'space' then you will be well on your way to remembering this guy. As a radical you will most likely find 穴 sitting at the top of a character, such as in the examples below. The Chinese word for cave 洞穴 also makes use of this radical.
